Wada Chirebandi, Magna Talyakathi, Yugant (Triology) 1994

The Wada Chirebandi trilogy—Wada Chirebandi (The Old Stone Mansion), Magna Talyakathi (The Pond), and Yugant (Apocalypse)—is a powerful dramatic narrative that delves into the decline of the joint family system and the feudal societal order under the relentless force of commercialization. Each play in the trilogy offers a distinct yet interconnected perspective on the evolving rural landscape, portraying the struggles of individuals caught in the tide of change.

Wada Chirebandi (The Old Stone Mansion)

The first part of the trilogy paints a poignant picture of an aristocratic family on the verge of collapse, burdened by traditions that no longer hold power in an era of economic transformation. It captures the emotional and social decay of a once-glorious lineage struggling to find relevance in a changing world.

Magna Talyakathi (The Pond)

The second part shifts focus to individuals who, despite newfound material prosperity, grapple with existential alienation. Their attempts to define their destinies and relationships—both personal and cosmic—mirror the inner conflicts of a society caught between past traditions and modern aspirations.

Yugant (Apocalypse)

The final installment presents a stark vision of the future, where individuals face a self-created wasteland—moral, political, social, spiritual, and environmental. The play forces its characters to make a choice: escape or confront the void with courage. It serves as a thought-provoking reflection on the dualities of Indian culture—acceptance and resistance, adaptation and stagnation, spirituality and ritualistic hypocrisy.

The Wada Chirebandi trilogy is a mirror to India’s evolving ethos, encapsulating both the resilience and contradictions of its people. It remains a timeless exploration of societal transformation, urging audiences to question, reflect, and engage with the ever-shifting dynamics of human existence.

Saptatara is a hard-hitting political drama that delves into the complexities of corruption, power struggles, and the moral dilemmas faced by those in authority. The film sheds light on how political leaders manipulate systems for personal gain while ordinary citizens bear the consequences.

Plot Overview

Vishwas Salunkhe (Ajinkya Deo), a dedicated municipal assistant commissioner, is assigned to oversee a sub-area of Mumbai where several dilapidated chawls are on the verge of collapse. Concerned for the safety of the residents, he issues notices for the evacuation of Saptatara, a crumbling structure at risk of disaster. However, his efforts are met with resistance—chawl dwellers refuse to vacate, and the owners ignore the warnings.

Despite the challenges, Salunkhe remains firm in his mission. His determination, however, attracts the attention of Chief Minister Uttamrao Deshmukh (Yashvant Dutt), a powerful politician with vested interests. Deshmukh, who has financial ties with the chawl owners as part of his election funding network, intervenes. He demands access to the Saptatara file and, in return, assigns Salunkhe to oversee civil work in his future daughter-in-law’s village.

Upon his arrival in the village, Salunkhe encounters yet another struggle—local residents opposing the construction of electric towers on their ancestral land. With their livelihoods at stake, they resist the project, forcing Salunkhe to confront deeper ethical questions about his role in the system.

A Reflection of Reality

Saptatara presents a stark and compelling narrative on urban decay, political influence, and the cost of development. It questions the integrity of governance and highlights the struggles of those caught between bureaucratic decisions and grassroots resistance.

Directed by Paresh Mokashi, the film beautifully captures Phalke’s unwavering determination, eccentric genius, and unshakable belief in his vision.
